K9 Search & Recovery Scotland sniffer dog Barra continues to win plaudits even into retirement having just been inducted into the Animal Heroes Hall of Fame
A hero sniffer dog who helped bring closure to Glasgow families with missing loved one has been inducted into an animal hall of fame.
Springer Spaniel Barra, Scotland's only underwater sniffer dog, spent 11 years helping to find bodies in the River Clyde before retiring from duty last year. Barra was originally born in Wales before being taken to his forever home in Dumbarton where his potential as a Victim Recovery dog was discovered. With just under a year of training, he qualified as Scotland's first Submerged Victim Recovery Dog, and K9 Search & Recovery Scotland was created.Read more: Over 900 Glasgow drivers fined for multiple Low Emission Zone breaches in one month
Owner Iain, from Helensburgh, West Dunbartonshire, spent a year training Barra using pigs' meat. When he smells something, he barks, scratches the deck and sits down. He stands again if the boat goes out of range of the scent. The Coastguard volunteer has received calls from police and coastguards all over the country to help in the search for missing people.To recognise his hero work, Barra has been inducted into the Animal Heroes Hall of Fame.
