The Prime Minister consulted a number of former defence ministers before making his announcement in Poland
These included former defence secretary Ben Wallace, who has previously warned the UK armed forces have been “hollowed out” by under-funding, and James Heappey, who quit as armed forces minister last month, partly in protest over defence spending.
Autocratic states like Russia, Iran and China pose “a direct threat to the lives and livelihoods of people in the UK” and around the world, the Government said. Both Mr Wallace and Mr Heappey backed Mr Sunak’s spending announcement, arguing that the money is sustainable in the long term rather than a more immediate injection of cash that would be under-funded.: “It is the right thing to do at the right time to continue growing the investment in defence and our armed forces, because the world is becoming ever more insecure and unstable.
Mr Sunak also spoke to Parliament’s former defence committee chairman Tobias Ellwood to persuade him to support his plans. It is understood the Prime Minister spoke to Mr Ellwood in the division lobbies during Tuesday’s late night Rwanda votes. The Tory grandee toldhe backed the announcement, saying: “By any measure our world is getting more dangerous, not less. This increase in defence spend allows us to upgrade our defence posture as the threat picture grows.
