Paul O’Grady was, according to Carol Vorderman, “one of those people that just made you feel every part of you was alive”. Only a few weeks ago, the comedian and TV personality, beloved for his wit and kindness, was playing Miss Hannigan in a production of. But this morning, his long-term partner Andre Portasio announced that O’Grady has died, “unexpectedly but peacefully”, at the age of 67.
O’Grady, born in 1955 in Birkenhead, Merseyside, is known for his Radio 2 show , his role as the presenter of Channel 5’sThe Paul O’Grady Show. He broke into the showbiz scene in the 1980s, having worked as a social worker in Camden, where he moved from Liverpool in his early 20s. There O’Grady met Brendan Murphy, at the time the manager of a local gay sauna, who became his manager and long-term partner; he has spoken multiple times in interviews about the tragedy of these years, as Aids swept through the gay community in London.
