As a Black hijabi model in South Korea, Ridwan Ibrahim is setting a path forward that she once thought was near impossible.
Black hijabi model Ridwan Ibrahim never once imagined taking up modeling as a serious career pursuit. The 25-year-old, Somali-American model explains, over a Zoom interview, that people would always encourage her to get into modeling, complimenting her on her height and slender body type. However, being raised by immigrant parents who moved to America to provide her and her siblings a better chance at life and education, modeling was far from what they had in mind for her.
“Obviously at the time, I was super stiff as it was my first time modeling. I didn't know what the heck I was doing,” Ibrahim says jokingly. “But I really enjoyed it and then after that, I started just doing more [modeling], while I was still working at the school.”It wasn’t too soon after that she began to receive messages from various Korean fashion brands asking if she was interested in modeling for them.
When she began full-time modeling, she realized that it would be difficult for her to get an agency to take her on in South Korea due to her decision toas a hijab-wearing model. “I would go into Korean agencies and I would tell them like, ‘Hey, these are my restrictions,’” says Ibrahim. “I'm a hijab model, I’m Muslim, and they were just kind of like thrown off by that because they don’t really understand what Islam is to even start with. They just know what's in the mainstream media.
