Rick and Morty's showrunner explained why Rick's portals were taken away in Season 6's first half: RickandMorty
Rick and Morty started out Season 6 with the surprise reveal that Rick Sanchez would not have access to the trademark portals, and the showrunner behind the new season explained why the team decided to take them away for the first half of the sixth season. Following the end of the fifth season where Evil Morty used all of the portal fluid in the Citadel to escape from the Central Finite Curve, it was revealed that Rick's portal gun was completely broken.
