Spurs’ Josh Richardson, Zach Collins brothers in arms when it comes to ‘nasty’ play
Veteran tough guys Mario Elie and Jerome Kersey did it for the Spurs when they won their first NBA title in 1999.
Popovich introduced “nasty” to the local lexicon when TNT’s cameras caught him rallying the troops during a timeout in the fourth quarter of Game 1 of the 2012 Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder. It’s an approach that Richardson, a seventh-year guard, and Collins, a fourth-year forward/center, have long embraced.
“Sometimes you got to get a tech to amp the guys up,” Richardson, who is tied with Collins for the team lead in ‘T’s’ with three, said Wednesday morning after shootaround in preparation for that night’s game against Oklahoma City. Along those lines, Richardson hasn’t been afraid to speak his mind during timeouts or in the locker room.
“I get mad. I get emotional ... and I think that kind of gets me fired up,” he said. “I don’t have like a plan going into a game, like ‘Tonight, I am going to rough it up.’ It’s just kind of how I play. It comes out naturally.”
