A day after a refreshing 12-point victory over Charlotte, Rice was totally overmatched...
Rice hasn’t had an answer to North Texas all season. Not many Conference USA teams have. The Mean Green have allowed the fewest points of anyone in the nation and are poised to capture a second straight league tournament.
From the start Rice struggled. The Owls tied the game 2-2 on a Carl Pierre jumper a minute-and-a-half in. That was as close as Rice would get, trailing 35-17 at the break. The Mean Green gradually pulled away from the cold-shooting Owls, who had an 8-minute stretch of not scoring a point and 10 ½-minutes between field goals.
On Wednesday, behind a strong defensive effort, Rice stifled fourth-seed Charlotte 73-61. But the 49ers aren’t the Mean Green.
