Bridge Heywood Caravan Park cleared trees at one end of the historic Martholme Viaduct crossing the River Calder, with one councillor estimating 150 trees were felled as a result of the action
A former woodland site next to a historic grade II-listed viaduct has been ‘destroyed and made barren’ by a caravan park‘s recreation area, a Ribble Valley councillor has alleged.
A covering letter from the caravan park’s agent, AV Town Planning of Nelson, to Ribble Valley Borough Council states: “The works undertaken involve excavation of a channel and mound adjacent to the viaduct to avoid trespass, together with benches and picnic tables, and re-seeding of the areas with a wild flower meadow mix to incorporate these lands into a wider recreation area as a nature walk.”
This week, Independent councillor David Birtwhistle focused on the lost woodland and before-and-after photos of the old railway embankment. He had pictures including Google Earth images taken over different years and another image from Read resident Clifton Pollard, who spoke at the Ribble Valley development committee meeting for Martholme Greenway group and Readstone Environment Group. One image appeared to show one side of the embankment clear of trees in April 2021.
Regarding the importance of trees in tackling air emissions, he said: “As the Ribble Valley is the largest producer of CO2 in Lancashire, we need more trees, not less. I think figures show that are 38 per cent of emissions come from industry and 14 per cent from other sources in this area. So we could actually do with the lion’s share of the 30,000 trees that Lancashire County Council intends to plant.
