Councillors in the Ribble Valley are calling for action to be taken to tackle the areas pollution problems
Two Conservative councillors are calling for talks between key organisations about air quality and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in Lancashire’s Ribble Valley. They say the district’s emissions are the largest of any Lancashire borough, with the cement industry, farming and road traffic among the sources.
Road transport is another key area. The report states: “Currently, there are thought to be 45,647 vehicles in the Ribble Valley. At an average of 2.4 vehicles per household, it’s estimated that since 2011 there are an additional 9,568 cars on Ribble Valley roads, based on an additional 4,020 properties completed and occupied.”
They say progress on pollution has been made in some ways, with industrial emissions generally falling, and the move to cleaner electric vehicles. However, there is still much to be done, they argue. The recommendations are: “Although there are identifiable improvements. there are still some difficult issues which need talking about and detailed proposals. A summit would be an excellent opportunity to involve a wide range of organisations to deliver positive solutions to some incredibly challenging issues.”
Ribblesdale plant manager Gary Young said: “Safety and environmental performance are key priorities for us, and we take our responsibility to mitigate the impact of our operations extremely seriously. We work closely with our regulator, the Environment Agency, and our activity is continuously monitored and audited on a regular basis.”
