The Houston premiere of Hansol Young's play about a child who thinks he is a wolf is unique and unforgettable.
And this child is no ordinary child. He is aggressive, thinks he is a wolf, and has all the symptoms of early trauma that manifest themselves in violent ways. He can’t follow the rules at school, but he is surrounded by adults who can’t follow rules either. See how that works? Wolf is played by the wonderful Alan Kim, who says his lines for the puppet that is used to portray the child .
In this world of domestic conflict, where adults duke it out for power and control over both Wolf and other family issues, there is a parallel universe in this play of the boxing match. Ash is trying to make it as a professional boxer. This addition of Wolf to her partnership with Robin will challenge both her patience and her ambitions. There are familial fight scenes and boxing fight scenes, all handled with aplomb by fight choreographer Luke Fedell.
Everything really does feel like a fight in this play, whether it is taking Wolf to yoga to calm him down, or to the boxing gym to wear him out. Wolf is a walking defense mechanism, employing his imaginative identity as a wolf to figure out his identity vis-a-vis his old and new “packs.” We have sympathy and empathy for this child, who can be funny and scary all at the same time.
The standoff of this play is like a proverbial countdown. Suffice it to say there are some ownership issues over young Wolf, who must have been in advanced reading class He must have been reading Herman Melville’s “Bartleby, the Scrivener,” who famously refuses to stick to the script of corporate life claiming “I would prefer not to.” You will feel that resonate through the unforgettable last scenes of this riveting and provocative play.
With everything interesting all at once , and lots of plates spinning in the air, you won’t be able to forget Wolf or this charismatic ensemble cast. They will force you to consider what “family” really means, and even if someone is the “most important breath” in your life, if that really “changes”” anything at all.
