The 10-time Tony-winning musical's touring production plays through Sunday at the San Diego Civic Theatre

The touring Broadway musical “The Band’s Visit” begins with the same words on a screen that opened the lovely 2007 movie that inspired it: “Not so long ago, a group of musicians came to Israel from Egypt. You probably didn’t hear about it. It wasn’t very important.”

Running a tight 95 minutes, about the same length as the film, “The Band’s Visit” is about what happens when the Alexandria Ceremonial Police Orchestra take the wrong bus to a concert gig in Israel and end up stranded overnight in a small, remote desert town. Nothing important happens in the Israeli town of Bet Hativkah, the villagers say, but the musicians’ arrival brings some hope, joy and a sense of community from the outside world.

Joe Joseph is warm and touching as Haled, the band’s trumpeter who’s pledged to an empty, arranged marriage back home but desperate to feel romance, so he becomes an unexpected matchmaker for local café worker Papi, played with endearing awkwardness by Coby Getzug. Joshua Grosso also has a standout song as the “Telephone Guy,” who stands by a payphone for days, or maybe weeks, waiting for his girl to call.
