After so many hundreds of years on stages all over the world, finding a real surprise in Romeo and Juliet is nothing to bite your thumb at. yxe
But the tragedy really starts hitting home when we meet Juliet — dancing around in her bedroom with her hairbrush without a care in the world, like every 13-year-old girl ever, with no idea what’s about to happen.
It doesn’t help that the people who most want to protect the young couple — Friar Lawrence and Juliet’s nurse — have very little power compared to the great households of Verona. Harder’s song in Act II is a particularly standout moment for her character: when she knows that she gave Juliet all of her deep love and best effort, and that, in this time and place, it could never have been enough to save her.
Beaudry’s tragic, lingering presence draws attention to all the moments where the story could have gone differently, and better — if only this had been a different story.
