Tom Cruise plays Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning - Part One from Paramount Pictures and Skydance., Tom Cruise is back with the seventh installment of a series that somehow manages to increase the stakes yet again.
The narrative of the film is relatively simple: Ethan Hunt is tasked with capturing a key that allows the control of a sentient AI system currently wreaking havoc in global computer networks. The fun comes in the execution. Identities are assumed; masks are worn and revealed; and the question of what is real, what is fake, and what to do with that information creates a steady sense of engagement.
Ultimately this series has never been as overly successful in setting up consistent narrative arcs as it has been in creating a series of stunning set pieces. Shortly before my screening, I got into a debate with a group of friends about whether Tom Cruise was a good actor or simply a movie star.
Hunt’s unique set of skills is bolstered most by his loyalty to his friends—a recurring crew anchored by performances from Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, and Rebecca Ferguson—sacrificing the success of aspects of his missions to secure the safety of those he trusts most.
