If the Aaron Sorkin film whetted your appetite for more, this documentary from Amy Poehler about the power couple is a satisfying cinematic meal.
Both started life in financially comfortable families that experienced dramatic reversals of fortune when they were teenagers. Arnaz, the son of a mayor, ended up a Cuban refugee in the United States, and Ball had a difficult climb as a showgirl. When they married in 1940, they weren’t a power couple. She was known, but not especially popular, a star of B-movies and a co-star in A-movies. And he was a bandleader. For the first decade of their marriage, they barely saw each other.
The on-screen Lucille Ball of the 1930s and 40s was hard-boiled, rather like the Lucy of her 1970s talk show appearances. That zany character she created - and we have to call it her creation - came about through radio, and from radio she went to television. The film documents how Lucy used her clout to get her husband cast as her co-star. It was a way for them to see each other.
