As Hall explained in his program notes, today’s “Hypocrisy of Justice” is now almost unrecognizable from theat Symphony Center in 2015. The most provocative section of Bruce’s script comes at the very end, in which Banks’ “Bigger” posits a vision of Black self-empowerment a la Frantz Fanon and Marcus Garvey. It’s one of Bruce’s most powerful punches, but the current version rinses it down with a long instrumental outro that feels more like a cooldown than a coda. Personally, I wish Bruce’s words had been permitted to hang in the air.
