Of the 49 players drafted by the 49ers since 2017, only about half remain on the roster, while others resume their careers elsewhere, like Reuben Foster is doing in the USFL.
SANTA CLARA — Reuben Foster has resurfaced in pro football, six years after being drafted 31st overall and becoming the 49ers’ biggest bust since their regime took power in 2017.
It was Foster’s first pro game since October 2018, his 16th and final one with the 49ers, who cut him the next month after an arrest in Tampa, Florida, on the eve of a game. His NFL career was further derailed by an extensive knee injury in his first practice with Washington in May 2019, a month after he came off the commissioner’s exempt list.
Foster was nominated for USFL Defensive Player of the Week but did not win that honor. Meanwhile, former San Jose State quarterback Josh Love won USFL offensive honors for the Michigan Panthers . This is the USFL’s second season, in a reincarnated state from its 1983-85 origin.
