A look back at the war in 2022, a year of Ukrainian defiance and resilience in the face of Russian aggression
Photographs and video by Justyna Mielnikiewicz/MAPS for The Wall Street JournalAround the time of the start of the conflict, Russian President Vladimir Putin described Ukraine as a country led by a “gang of drug addicts and neo-Nazis."Instead, 2022 was a year of Ukrainian defiance in the face of Russian aggression, as many civilians joined territorial defense groups, took in refugees and persevered in the face of widespread power cuts caused by Russian attacks on infrastructure.
Ada Petlia, 25, had the Russian word for peace tattooed on her face. She and her husband, who was displaced by the first Russian aggression against Ukraine in 2014 , fled Odessa. They now make Molotov cocktails in Lviv with other civilians. Borodyanka city workers restore electricity, water and internet in bombed residential buildings. Borodyanka was heavily bombed in March, leaving parts of the city completely destroyed.
The battle for Hostomel was among the earliest of the war. But by April, the city was restoring power, and locals were returning home.This browser does not support the video element.
