There was a 'change in accommodation criteria' according to the Home Office

Residents of a small village in West Northamptonshire are "relieved and happy" at the Home Office's decision not to house 400 asylum seekers in a nearby hotel. It was announced on Friday that Highgate House was deemed "unsuitable" following a change in government criteria for temporary accomodation.

Two public consultations were held in the village this month, with the second, on Tuesday, January 10, attended by a reported 700 local residents objecting to the plan. Mr Heaton-Harris also created an online consultation which received upwards of 500 responses. "People were genuinely anxious about it," said Mr Hill. People were "catastrophising over what would happen", he said, and that the lack of response from the Home Office meant people were "second guessing".

Mr Hill said that in the wake of the U-turn he had received lots of messages from residents expressing "relief, thanks," and saying that they were "happy they're not worried about it any longer". He said others had pointed out that there would still need to be accommodation for asylum seekers elsewhere, however. "We're pleased from a very local and selfish point of view, but it doesn't solve the problem," he said.
