Residents living near the Thornton Composite Reservoir say is known as the toilet because of the foul odors, and one, Wanda Poplar, says she is moving because of it.
Wanda Poplar is leaving Thornton in part because of the crime and the smell from the Thornton Composite Resevoir.As an 86-year-old resident of Thornton, Botta says the odor coming off the town’s quarry reservoir can be oppressive.
The Thornton Composite Reservoir, which residents say is known around town as the toilet, received one of its biggest tests when torrential rains triggered historic flooding in Cook County. And while all indications are the reservoirby not overflowing and reducing flooding in many communities, residents around the reservoir describe the constant odor that affects their daily lives.
“The odor neutralization system is currently being expanded at a cost of $1.05 million and will operate on the fence line of the reservoir facing the communities,” Fore said in an emailTwo other seven-figure contracts pledge to reduce the odor for residents by 2025. Fore stressed MWRD’s dedication to helping reduce the smell, saying “the Thornton Composite Reservoir is an extremely large, complex operation and significant changes take time.
Thornton Village Administrator Doug Beckman said recently some people may no longer report complaints to MWRD because they do not think anything will happen.
