Republican senator to introduce bill to make Juneteenth a federal holiday
Sen. John Cornyn said he would introduce a bill to make Juneteenth, commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S., a federal holiday as a response to the nationwide protests against racism.
Juneteenth marks the day--June 19, 1865--when news of emancipation reached enslaved people deep in the former Confederacy in Galveston, Texas, 2½ years after President Abraham Lincoln issued his Emancipation Proclamation. Currently, 47 states and Washington, D.C., treat Juneteenth as a holiday or a special observance.
The office of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell didn't respond to a request for comment. Mr. Cornyn, who is running for re-election in Texas, said his bill would be bipartisan. "It's an opportunity to reflect on our history, the mistakes we have made, but yet how far we've come in the fight for equality, and a reminder of just how far we still have to go,” Mr. Cornyn said of Juneteenth, which is a state holiday in Texas. That is especially true this year, he said. “As the list of black men and women killed by police officers in custody grows, the calls for action are getting louder and louder, as they must, and as they should,” he added.
