There's not a single Black woman in the entire U.S. Senate, but Congresswoman Barbara Lee hopes to change that.
"Black women have lived at the intersection of so many challenges that people in our country face, especially here in California," she said. "We've been able to fight and be able to lift people up and break down many of those barriers and the perspective we have because of that not only is important for people of color and women, it's important for the country because the country still has to live up to its creed of liberty and justice for all.
But Lee has roots in Los Angeles, moving to Pacoima for junior high and high school, where she became the first Black cheerleader at San Fernando High School. Lee joins Orange County Congresswoman Katie Porter and L.A. Congressman Adam Schiff in a competitive race that will be dominated by fundraising, an area where Schiff and Porter have an advantage.
