Charity plans rescue operation as dozens of breeding felines run wild on Barra
More than 20 cats have been left running wild on the Barra in the Outer Hebrides after the death last year of two elderly people who kept cats in their barns.
Western Isles Support for Cats and Kittens have warned that kitten season begins in April – likely to further boosting numbers and putting They hope to trap the cats, take them to the nearby island of Lewis to be neutered, and find them homes throughout Scotland’s Western Isles.“There’s a colony of around 20 cats sticking together, but there’s probably quite a few more – potentially even double that,” said Maryann MacAuley, volunteer at WISCK, told“There isn’t a large supply of rabbit and rodents for them, like on the mainland,” she said.
But it is the smaller bird species on the island, such as thrush and warbler, which are feared to be most at risk from a growing population of feral cats.
