You could see this thing from miles away - how many of you remember it?
For those of a younger generation, you may not realise the area where Glasgow Harbour now sits used to be home to an altogether different structure which dominated the Glasgow skyline for almost 90 years.
It was conjoined by high-level gantries that almost every Glasgow kid who ever saw them imagined were giant slides. The four inter-linked Clyde Port Authority granaries at Meadowside quay represented the largest brick building in Europe when finished. The granary, interestingly, symbolised an area of the city that for centuries housed mills that provided employment to Glaswegians, initially centred around the lower River Kelvin - indeed grain mills feature on the Partick coat of arms.
Originally, the grain was lifted from bulk carriers by bucket elevators, with subsequent developments seeing pneumatic suction elevators used to clear the grain from the ships. And in 1964, further plans were drawn up by the Clyde Navigation Trust to construct a new storage building, accommodating 80,000 tons of grain, at a cost of £1.5 million.
