Chicago actor Lia Mortensen, who died on June 7, left an indelible impression onstage and offstage with her generosity and spirit of adventure.Lia Mortensen was a great actor. If you saw her in any of the many roles she played at theaters large and small over the past three decades in Chicago, you couldn’t help but be struck by the honesty and intensity of her performances, as well as her luminous physical presence.
Bilal Dardai, former artistic director of the Neo-Futurists, wrote a public Facebook post about working with Mortensen in 2006 on some sketches he wrote and directed as part of a gala for the now-gone Next Theatre in Evanston. While everyone in the room was very forgiving, Lia was the one who exuded the most warmth and empathy, the one who looked into the vortex of my plight and kept offering the gift of an encouraging smile or kind word when something was starting to work. It was a generosity that buoyed my confidence through those few rehearsals we had, that sustained me long enough to carry the project through to its lone performance.
Osborne also noted that generosity in Mortensen “also translated into her day-to-day life. She was very curious about you. She wanted to know who you were—whether you were the postman or a brother-in-law, she just cared. I don’t want to lionize her, but she just gave love. In a funny and acerbic way.”
