We voters deserve an apology from the 70 state GOP Legislators who signed the Dec. 4, 2020 letter to PA’s congressional delegation requesting that they object to final certification of our votes.

The front page article in the July 25 edition of the Sunday Patriot News highlighting the prominent role of PA in the January 6 hearings prompted this reflection: We voters deserve at the very least an apology from the 70 state GOP Legislators who signed the Dec. 4, 2020 letter to PA’s congressional delegation requesting that they object to final certification of our votes.

It is important to remember that this came after re-counts and certification, as well as after both state and federal courts had dismissed all suits alleging fraud as “without merit.” Nothing can now absolve U.S. Rep. Scott Perry’s violation of his oath of office. But our state’s GOP legislators did not technically violate their oath. But in a time of great political stress, their courage failed them; they failed to stand up publicly to defend our Constitution. Worse, they asked others, our state’s congressional delegation, to violate their oaths.

These 70 may not deserve the harshest judgment. None of us is perfect; we never know how much courage we posses until it is tested. The 70 made a mistake, a terrible mistake. Mistakes, however, can be redeemed. But redemption requires honest acknowledgement of the mistake and a sincere pledge to learn from it. This is the first and most important thing every PA voter should ask of these 70, and of every candidate, before committing to vote for any of them again.
