Liverpool beat Everton 2-0 at Anfield for the third season in succession, registering their 14th win in the past 24 Premier League home derbies and 99th in the fixture’s history, while Mohamed Salah made another decisive contribution to take Jürgen Klopp’s team briefly top of the table.

“He made five blocks - at least two more than any player on the pitch - to take him to 15 for the season, which is more than any man in the Premier League. Tarkowski threw his body on the line time and time again as Everton held firm for an hour. “The third - referee Craig Pawson’s failure to send off Ibrahima Konate when a trip on Beto merited a second caution - reeked of the kind of rank inconsistency which is contaminating the Premier League, leaving Everton manager Sean Dyche ‘baffled’ and Klopp relieved.”Paul Joyce of The Times wrote: “For so much of the 243rd Merseyside derby, it seemed as if Jürgen Klopp and Sean Dyche would be unified in lamenting the decision-making of their players.
