Texas encountered little resistance in handing Oklahoma its most lopsided defeat in the 118-year-old Red River rivalry.

Oklahoma head coach Brent Venables, left, and Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian talk before their NCAA college football game at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Saturday, Oct. 8, 2022. DALLAS — A few truths came into clear view Saturday afternoon at the Cotton Bowl.

After today, the grandiose takes about Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers being a once-in-a-generation type of talent feel much closer to reality than hopeful hyperbole. The offense and defense finally complement one another. And second-year coach Steve Sarkisian’s seat feels a lot cushier after his Longhorns hammered the Sooners 3-3, 0-3) in a 49-0 win in front of 92,100 fans, about half of whom had already fled to the surrounding fairgrounds with a quarter remaining.

“I hate to dwell, but we felt like we let one get away last year,” Sarkisian said, referencing Texas’ 55-48 loss to OU after leading 28-7 last October. “And I credit for trusting us. It takes time plus consistency. But I think we’ve gotten to a point where we’ve got a great deal of trust in our program.”

So it tried besting the Longhorns with the Wildcat formation. Tight ends handled snaps. Receivers handled snaps. Running backs handled snaps. Those turned out to be the Sooners’ most productive plays, and they still kept asking Beville to make something happen with his arm at points.
