Blood donations have decreased by about 10 percent since the beginning of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
The Red Cross says it is in dire need of blood and platelet donations. CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Red Cross has issued a plea for blood donors, saying the nation is facing “its worst blood shortage in over a decade.”
“While some types of medical care can wait, others can’t,” Dr. P,ampee Young, chief medical officer of the Red Cross, says in a news release. “Hospitals are still seeing accident victims, cancer patients, those with blood disorders like sickle cell disease, and individuals who are seriously ill who all need blood transfusions to live even as Omicron cases surge across the country.
All blood types are needed, but there’s especially a need for types O positive and O negative, as well as platelet donations.
