Officials will combine transportation and public works. Crisis response will also come under one roof.
Dallas officials are continuing to consolidate city departments to save money in the midst of a tough budget year.
Council member Omar Narvaez, who chairs the council’s transportation committee, said the move to consolidate public works and transportation could help speed up projects, increase efficiency and save the city money. He said the city has delayed projects because plans may have to go through transportation, public works and other departments before moving to the construction phase.“And those delays can hurt because every week, month or year just adds to our price tag,” the councilman said.
“In the coming days, I will identify next steps pertaining to leadership and structure of the Public Works Department,” Tolbert said. City staff told council members during a preliminary budget briefing in May that the city had a $38 million funding gap in the upcoming budget, but they were aiming to bridge the gap by the time Tolbert presents her proposal for the annual citywide spending plan on Aug. 13.
