SINGAPORE - Members of the public should keep their distance from tapirs as they are large and powerful animals, said the Animal Concerns Research and Education Society , after one was seen in a video running along a park connector in Punggol on Sunday morning.

In a video posted on the SG PCN Cyclist Facebook group on Monday by user Pong Posadas, the tapir can be seen running along the park connector, past a jogger and another person pushing a skate scooter.Speaking to The Straits Times, Mr Posadas said he was doing his usual morning ride at the park connector and initially thought a horse was running behind him.

“I just watched it from afar until it went straight to an opening in the fences, straight to the river,” he said. The Malayan tapir is the largest of the four tapir species, growing up to 2.5m long and weighing up to 500kg, and can be recognised by the distinctive white patch across its back.
