The agency determined that it is “not prudent” to designate areas where the two species have been found as a “critical habitat,” the release stated.
Although their exact numbers are unclear, Warriner said he estimates that only about two or three dozen specimen have been found. Thousands may have died in the last century, he said. The San Antonio segment of the Edwards Aquifer is the natural habitat for multiple species of aquatic animals, including seven that are protected by the Endangered Species Act, according to the wildlife service. The aquifer is managed by the Edwards Aquifer Authority.“What we found, basically, that there has not been basically a decline in the water quality down there and the fish there are pretty much free from the contaminants,” Warriner said.
