Going into the bottom of the 11th on Monday, it looked like a classic bounceback from the Rangers. They’d gotten a homer fromGot a comeback from a blown save by Aroldis Chapman, who went two innings for the first time in five years. Got a big double by Nate Lowe, also struggling. And then Will Smith blew it. I don’t know how Bruce Bochy can go back to him as the closer. He’s had a terrible month, and he’d mostly done it with smoke and mirrors all season.
But flaws, while improved, still remain.Clearly it’s an unfinished product after Monday’s game. I even thought Bochy’s decision to keep Chapman in for two innings -– something he had not done in six years — was based on the belief that you need a strikeout pitcher in the 10th with a runner on second. And Will Smith is not a strikeout pitcher. It’s starting to look like he’s not a closer.
