Everything seemed lined up for the uniform debut to go smoothly. The jerseys looked sharp. The Rangers, not so much.
“It’s hard to put into words how bad it was in every aspect,” said Gray and he was talking about his performance, not the trousers. “It really boils down to mechanics. I don’t get so wild like that. Today just seemed a little herky-jerky, a little out of character, out of tempo and rhythm.
A problem was evident from the first pitch. It went all the way to the backstop. And Gray never found any kind of fix. He felt too fast going down the mound and it impacted his ability to control the strike zone. He ended up walking five, the most he’s walked since 2019 while with Colorado. He threw two wild pitches and hit a batter.
After a messy fifth that included Kemp’s homer, an error and a pair of walks, Gray went back out for the sixth, but allowed a single and hit a batter and that was that. Reliever Jonathan Hernández allowed the tying run to score on a two-out single that bounced off third baseman Josh Jung’s glove and eluded shortstop Ezequiel Duran.
He was not alone in being “off”. After Jonah Heim’s three-run first inning homer put the Rangers up 4-0 against the worst pitching staff in the league, the offense just shut down. The few baserunners the Rangers did get were magically erased by baserunning mistakes. The Rangers ended up with three caught stealings, one each by Leody Taveras, Ezequiel Duran and Travis Jankowski. The Rangers hadn’t had three runners caught stealing in the same game since 2018.
