“He’s one guy that seeing first-hand and watching him work has been [different from what was expected],” manager Bruce Bochy said Sunday morning. “He’s a different animal now.” This is a definite jump. For his 40 major league innings last season, Ragans averaged 92.1 mph with his fastball, which he threw 44 percent of the time. His fastball is not necessarily his calling card, but it’s still the pitch he uses most often. He sets up his assortment of off-speed and breaking balls with it. Create more velocity differential and the secondary stuff plays better.
