Barry insists his former club have raised the bar and his reaction to Lisbon draw shows just how far.
It's difficult to sum up the admiration I’m feeling for this Rangers team right now, in the wake of another astonishing Thursday night in the Europa League.
And hopefully Benfica’s players have come away from the first leg thinking that’s the best version of Rangers that they can come up against. Because, if that’s the case, they might be in for a big surprise when they run out under the lights at Ibrox next week. The truth is, Rangers have raised the bar for Scottish football all across the continent by achieving massive results in Europe over a sustained period of time. I remember under Alex McLeish when we faced Feyenoord in the last 16 knowing we were two games away from a quarter final. That felt like a massive opportunity at the time - maybe even a one in a lifetime moment for us as players and as a club.
But I enjoyed listening to the manager after the game on Thursday when he said he wasn’t happy at coming away from the Stadium of Light with just a 2-2 draw. Yes, he was proud of the players because he knew how deep they had to dig. But he felt there was more for them to take away from the first leg and that sums up the kind of progress that’s been made since his arrival six months ago.
