Range Rover EV pre-orders open later this year.
Jaguar Land Rover held a big press conference early Wednesday to outline its future. The automaker will now be known as JLR henceforth, which is what it's been commonly known as already, and it announced that it plans to open pre-orders for the much-anticipated all-electric Range Rover later this year.
The new Range Rover EV will ride on the same platform as the current internal-combustion model, which was designed for full electrification from the outset. Production and deliveries of the Range Rover EV are expected to begin sometime next year. Unfortunately, JLR didn't offer any specifics on the new model, with chief engineer Nick Collins telling"deliver true Range Rover values." So, it should be a fine luxury off-roader.
JLR also announced a new platform, dubbed Electric Modular Architecture , is in development. EMA will underpin a future mid-size SUV model of some sort, to be built at JLR's Halewood plant in Merseyside, U.K. The platform that underpins the big Range Rover and Range Rover Sport will continue on for some time, though, with a battery-electric version of the Sport in the works.
JLR is also dividing its lineup into four distinct brands, Land Rover, Range Rover, Defender, and Jaguar. Whereas before the full name for a Range Rover was"Land Rover Range Rover," it will now be simply,"Range Rover." The company also wants to transform Jaguar into a higher-end luxury marque, with a four-door all-electric GT car set to be its first new model since the I-Pace EV SUV was launched in 2018.
The electric Range Rover will also be the first EV from JLR since the I-Pace, a car that gave the company an early start in battery-electric cars, but one that was never followed up on immediately. Now JLR is playing catchup in a vastly changing world.
