The Texas Railroad Commission is preparing an application to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to take over the permitting of carbon storage wells, a burgeoning new industry as nations worldwide seek to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Eleven of Houston’s largest energy and chemical companies are announing plans to create a large-scale carbon storage complex in the Houston area to serve the region’s massive industrial and petrochemical sectors.WASHINGTON - The Texas Railroad Commission is preparing an application to the, a burgeoning new industry as nations worldwide seek to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Texas Attorney General's Office is currently reviewing state environmental statutes, to verify they meet federal requirements. And once that work is complete Governor Greg Abbott will submit an application to EPA, said Andrew Keese, a spokesman for the commission. "The RRC is in a strong position to enforce primacy given our long history of effectively regulating various classes of injection wells to protect public safety and the environment," he said in an email.
