Even at its maddest moments, this is infinitely more relatable than a pair of celebs trying to out-banter one another in a quirky B&B: chummy jaunts across Norfolk/Norway/New Orleans where increasingly arbitrary-seeming groups of famous faces go on holiday with the carefree merriment of people whose production team have done all their admin.
What a tonic it is instead to watch normies misread bus timetables, squabble over tidying their tents and take a detour to Mount Fuji only for it to be obscured by clouds in the return of. In the fourth season of the globe-sprinting competition, five teams race 15,000 kilometres from Hokkaido, the northernmost island in Japan, to Lombok – which, almost none of them seem to know, is in Indonesia – with no mobile phones and a modest budget.
The first checkpoint was Nara City in southern Japan. Given it’s a country famous for its hospitality and efficient transport, you might think contestants were being eased into things – but bullet trains were firmly off limits .And so we had 25-year-old Isabel talking about how relaxed she felt while her mother Eugenie yelled at her that they were about to miss a bus, and 20-year-old besties Alfie and Owen being cocky right up until they lost their only map.
The team on the most even keel was adorable mother and daughter Sharon and Brydie, whose warmth and people skills at one point prompted an elderly Japanese woman to gift them her actual shoes. Brydie was initially concerned her dyslexia would hinder her map-reading abilities, but she soon saw it as a positive that she is used to asking for help. It wasn’t entirely clear how these sweeties ended up being beaten by Stephen and Viv, who found time to stop off for a dip in a hot spring.
But by putting people in a travel situation with unrealistically heightened stakes, the show reveals the thrilling and frustrating truths of trying to go anywhere. The rising panic as you rush for a train, and the giddy high as you jump on just before the doors slam shut. The dawning realisation that you and your travel companion may not be as well-matched as you thought.
