Milton will likely become a hurricane, then a major hurricane by Tuesday
) - Quiet weather continues for our portion of the Gulf Coast as a tropical storm spins in the Gulf of Mexico. Tropical Storm Milton will pass well south of our area and impact the west coast of Florida midweek. A cold front moving across our area Monday night into Tuesday morning will help keep Milton away from the central Gulf Coast. Our weather will turn slightly cooler after the front passes.We’ve got another warm one ahead today.
The main steering factor for this storm is the approaching cold front. The front arrives just in time to keep Milton well south of our local area. However, this would drive it right into the west coast of Florida, where we have some major population centers. It looks like this will once again be one of those storms that strengthens quickly in the Gulf of Mexico, and we might have another major hurricane hit Florida. The exact landfall location will have huge implications for which population centers see impacts. This will likely be a smaller, more compact storm. The area of hurricane-force winds may extend out only a few miles from the center, so the exact path of the center really matters.
Again, locally we have no tropical threat. However, understand that because there’s a storm in the Gulf, our rip current risk will be very high beginning on Monday. This is a particularly dangerous aspect of tropical weather that needs to be taken seriously. If you see double red flags flying at our beaches, you cannot get in the water.
