Tisch attributed the programs’ success to the fact that residents are automatically enrolled and do not need special bins. The city sorts out large woody debris from the collected organic waste, which is sent to a compost facility in New Jersey. The remaining organic waste is slurried and sent to the city’s wastewater treatment plant at Newtown Creek in Greenpoint – where a long-promised project with National Grid to turnThe Queens program also cost the sanitation department a fraction of what curbside compost pickup costs for the rest of the city. The city spent $467,000 there, compared to more than $1.
