Queen Charlotte stars open up about Bridgerton universe's first gay love story
With all the kind of societal pressures of Regency England, what did you most love about bringing that love story to the screen?: The great thing about telling stories in general is that for us, as actors, we study human behaviour and human beings.
We had a historian come in, and she talked to us about… Back then, because everyone has so much elaborate clothing on, this idea of skin-on-skin contact was so rare and the moments you have that with someone else mean the world. I think my favourite scene for that was probably – do you agree with this, Sam? – was probably the bath scene.: I love that scene. I think we both just went… You know, as actors, it was great to play something different.
The one thing I really clung onto is that he is the eternal optimist. I tried to make him incredibly optimistic and hopeful for the sake of her, and how traumatic her lifestyle is, and how traumatic it becomes with everything that happens with George. I think it would have been tremendously easy as an actor to just go,"Okay, I'm just a man doing my job. I have no thoughts, I have no opinions but what I wanted to bring to it was a guy that has opinions, and is very empathetic, and is sensitive to the world around him, and to the events that are unfolding around him.
