Indigenous artists have created designs featuring various Indigenous leaders and influencers as they might appear on the $20 bill.
For example:
• Artist Anna Heffernan, of Michi Saagii Nishnaabe, Irish and French-Canadian heritage, chose to represent Elsie Knott on her bank-note design. In 1954, Knott became the first female chief in Canada after being elected to lead the Curve Lake First Nation.• Mi’kmaq artist Tracey Metallic chose to represent Margaret Pictou. Pictou, from the Eel River Bar First Nation in New Brunswick, joined the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War.
• Laura Deiter of North Bay, originally from the Peepeekisis Cree Nation, Band #81, in the Treaty Four Territory of Saskatchewan, depicted Cindy Blackstock, a Gitxsan advocate who has long championed the rights of Indigenous children.Article content • Alexandra Beals, an Afro-Indigenous artist originally from Mi’kma’ki/Nova Scotia, created a $20 bill featuring poet Rita Joe, a Mi’kmaq woman famous for her poems and crafts. She was given a National Aboriginal Role Model Award as an inspirational leader, and was awarded an Order of Canada.for the currency initiative. So far, it has more than 18,000 signatures, and hopes to reach 25,000.
