For this Puerto Rican grandmother from Newark, helping hurricane victims on the island was something she had to do firsthand.

These are some of the sights Vera has encountered while on her "missions" to help victims of Hurricane Fiona in Puerto Rico. People navigating their neighborhoods via canoe, fallen trees blocking the roads, and inundated crop fields.

This time around, Vera and Tainas Unidas are again helping by collecting food, water, medical supplies and other items needed by hurricane victims in Puerto Rico. The organization also partnered with two New Jersey businesses, Camacho & Son Float Services in East Orange and Mendez Jeep Club in Newark, which will serve as donation collection centers.

“[People will] message me and say ‘Please, can you check on my father or can you go check on my mom? She lives in this town or that town’ and of course, I go,” she says.
