West Lancs pub group that meet every week to knit clothes for premature babies
A West Lancashire pub has added the click of knitting needles to the clink of glasses through a new weekly group which aims helps to beat loneliness while making clothing for premature babies.
The Knit and Knatter group meets every Tuesday morning at The Hayfield pub in Ormskirk, which is owned by the Joseph Holt brewery. The idea came from landlady Jess Lucas who says she wanted to do more for those in the community who might be feeling lonely and looking for an opportunity to get out more.“Our pub is very community driven and what we kept hearing was how many people particularly older people, feel lonely.
The number of knitters in the UK has jumped by around one million since the start of the pandemic, according to the UK Hand Knitting Association, with people taking up the meditative hobby through lockdowns. But it's increasingly seen as a communal activity too. The group, which meets every Tuesday from 10am to 12 noon, also enjoys free tea and coffee as well as cake made by Sharon Gaskell who works at the Hayfield. The plan is to make items for Southport and Ormskirk Hospital Trust's Neonatal Unit.
Jess, who has yet to learn to knit herself, said: "The group are already thriving and getting bigger every week. It's such a lovely way to meet and to do good for others too."
