Chinese manufacturer Goertek will reportedly begin mass-producing the still-unnamed PSVR 2 headset sometime 'soon.'
More PSVR 2 details could be imminent since Chinese manufacturer Goertek will reportedly start mass-producing the device in the near future. Sony formally announced its next-generation PlayStation VR device in February 2021, with a blog post from Senior VP of Platform Planning & Management, Hideaki Nishino. The write-up from Nishino boasted very few specifics but confirmed that a streamlined setup would rest at the forefront of the new product's overall build.
Sony remains mum about the new device's tech specs, yet leaked information crops up every so often to offer alleged bits of insight. One rumor that made the rounds in May 2021 claimed PSVR 2 will outperform Oculus Quest 2 in terms of resolution. The Quest 2 outputs a resolution of 1832×1920 per eye, while the next PlayStation VR headset will allegedly target 2000×2040 per eye for full 4K capabilities.
With over five million units sold worldwide as of January 2020, the original PSVR is widely considered a success. Sony seems fully invested in the VR space, too, evidenced by its recent acquisition of VR developer Firesprite, a Liverpool, UK-based group founded in 2012 by Studio Liverpool alum.The PSVR 2 is expected to hit the market sometime in 2022. .
