We are committed to providing excellent health care while understanding our patients and doing our best to align treatment with their beliefs and preferences.
Clement, Psy.D., is director of behavioral health at San Diego American Indian Health Center and lives in Imperial Beach. As a clinical psychologist, I witness the tensions and stressors mount for San Diegans countywide every day — rising inflation, fewer resources since the end of the COVID-19 pandemic, and conflicting political agendas with unknown outcomes have left many of us worried about the present and what we are leaving for future generations.
We are confined as providers working within the health care industry to a set of standards that assumes everyone’s case should be handled the same. Each patient visit should take a predetermined amount of time based on the economic parameters that the institution/industry has set up for that facility to stay afloat financially. This presents challenges to implementing the platinum rule of “treat people the way they want to be treated” as not everyone fits within that box.
