Protesters toppled and burned the only Confederate statue in Washington, D.C.

In Washington, a group of about 200 protesters cheered Friday night as they toppled and burned a statue of Brigadier General Albert Pike, a prominent Freemason and former Confederate general.

Police officers didn't intervene and watched from a distance, even as some protesters pushed and grabbed two Wall Street Journal reporters covering the event. The protesters, many of whom were white, said they didn’t want photographs taken of those pulling down the statue. President Trump took to Twitter to criticize the police inaction in a tweet directed at Mayor Muriel Bowser, a longtime critic.
