Hundreds of protesters rallied outside the Ohio Statehouse on Saturday in Downtown Columbus, condemning House Bill 616 and supporting Roe v. Wade.
Nearly 250 protesters braved the wind and rain Saturday at the Ohio Statehouse in support of LGBTQ youth, people of color and abortion rights. , which restricts discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade— as well as critical race theory and other “divisive” concepts.
The crowd grew significantly for the demonstration hosted by the Columbus branch of the Party for Socialism and Liberation. The organization drew supporters out in defense of Roe v. Wade, following theColumbus protests condemn House Bill 616 and support Roe v. Wade “We will not be marching to the voting booths; we will march in the streets,” PSL Columbus member Hannah Simon told the audience. “No one in Congress is advocating for us, so we will advocate for ourselves. We are tired of having to fight for the same issues over and over. Nothing is guaranteed under capitalism, and the time to organize is right now.”
Simon and other activists led the crowd in chants, encouraging them to “stand up” and “fight back.” Individuals brought signs with abortion-rights messages. “I was very devastated to hear about the leaked Supreme Court draft opinion, and I’m just here because that’s not what the majority of Americans want,” Feick said. “This is a choice that should be between a pregnant person and their doctor, and politicians have no place in this decision-making process.
