Protecting Ukraine is guarding our own national security | Opinion

, comparing America’s choice now to the one faced in 1938 by British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain, who called Adolf Hitler’s invasion of Czechoslovakia “a quarrel in a faraway country between people of whom we know nothing.” Chamberlain was wrong on that one, as were the isolationists who kept the U.S. out of the conflict until it refused to be ignored on Dec. 7, 1941.

But the “America first” crowd says it’s too expensive. And they’re tired. Last month, U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., filed ain the House that calls for ending aid to Ukraine. Yes, it’s expensive to protect democracy. The United States has earmarked about $77.5 billion for Ukraine since the invasion a year ago. But to save that money now is to make it all but certain that conflict will expand to include American troops. That’s the bargain Gaetz is making.

We aren’t advocating for a “blank check” for Ukraine, as some of the opposition’s hyperbole suggests. We should be judicious with this spending. But we also shouldn’t let Gaetz and company misrepresent the gamble being made here. America’s national security is at stake. Let’s not shop at the clearance rack.
