The father of accused Highland Park shooter Robert Crimo III appeared Thursday in court, where Lake County prosecutors said they expect a grand jury indictment in the coming weeks.

The father, prosecutors alleged, acted recklessly when he vouched for his then-underage son in 2019 on state forms that allowed Crimo III to buy firearms.In 2019, Crimo III had threatened his family and attempted to suicide, authorities said, but was able to obtain his firearm owners card because there were no arrest reports or other reports on file that raised red flags.
Afterward, Gomez said he thought the charges against Crimo Jr. “might be an uphill battle for the state,” but declined to elaborate or gave an update on his client.
